Here I’m gonna tell you how you can dual boot windows 10 and Kali Linux (Version 2017.1). So now what your gonna need is Kali Linux Images. So if have not downloaded the latest version of Kali Linux please click – Download. Please download the Kali Image file according to your system architecture of 32 bit or 64 bit. Your Windows 10 are being installed in legacy boot mode or UEFI mode. Nowadays all the new laptops and PCs are coming with the UEFI mode. Some PC is compatible with legacy mode only so one have to install Kali Linux 2017 in legacy mode. If your Windows 10 installed in UEFI mode then I will encourage you to dual boot Kali Linux in UEFI mode itself.
Note: If Windows 10 vanished then change the boot mode to UEFI mode. When you switch back to UEFI mode you can easily get windows.
If download file has been completed, install ISO into Pendrive using Win32DiskImager – Download or Universal USB Installer. These programs have been used for flashing USB Drive with the Kali Linux 2017.1. It takes some time to flash Kali Linux on to Pendrive.
Setup the partition for installing Kali Linux. You need to shrink particular volume so right click on the volume and click Shrink Volume. You can shrink 50 GB; simply type 51200 in the amount of space to shrink in MB. Then click on Shrink and you will see Unallocated space so right click on it and click on simple volume. Click on Next again and again then click on Finish. It will format the volume and have 50 GB new volume. In this particular volume, we are going to install Kali Linux 2017.1.
Things to Remember: Do not shrink the volume from C Drive; it creates boot failure error and other sorts of problems.
Dual boot is always risky so if you are attempting to dual boot Windows 10 and Kali Linux always keep the backup of your important data. It’s not like everything will be fine always and you might lose your data.
Connect Pendrive with the windows 10 and began the reboot of Windows 10. Do some configuration on the BIOS menu. Open boot menu by pressing f12, f10 or f2 that depends on the PC/Laptops. Now go to the Security Option and disable secure boot then go to boot option and as said before choosing UEFI mode is better. Save all the changes and simply click on Yes. Then give the external drive the boot priority as you want (optional). Save the changes to Yes then shut down your laptop and simply press the power button and it will automatically get booted if you give the USB drive main priority else use boot option.
You will get the Kali installation screen and select Graphical install and hit enter. Choose English then choose the country and hit enter. It starts to detect the network interface and just continue. You can choose to ‘do not configure at this particular time now’. Choose the hostname and root password then continue. It starts to detect the disks and choose manual and choose partition which was of 50 GB and hit continue. Now choose Ext 4 and continue. Permit this partition is formatted and go to mount point. Mount Point will be root now choose the bootable flag and enter on it till it’s ON. A bootable flag should be on and simply hit enter and done setting up the partition. Go down and click finish partitioning and write changes to disk.
It will ask you do you want to return to the partitioning menu click NO. It will ask do you want to write changes to disks, click Yes. Now it will start to copy the data to the disk and take some time to do that. After finishing you will choose network mirror Yes and hit enter. Leave HTTP proxy information blank. If it is a bad archive mirror then continue without a network mirror. It starts to install the grub bootloader on the hard disk and it will take some time to do that. Now it will check for other operating systems and it asks us to install the grub boot loader to the master boot record and say Yes and hit enter. Device for boot loader installation choose the first one /dev/sda and hit enter.
You will see installation has been completed, now you will remove Pendrive before clicking on Continue. Now it will remove live packages from the installation and everything has been set up. It will restart and you will see new grub bootloader. When you run Kali Linux it will take some time because it is booting up for the first time. After that enter username (root) and password then sign in.
